ABOUT Environs Kimberley

Environs Kimberley (EK) is an independent community environmental organization dedicated to protecting the nature and culture of the Kimberley region.

We support development that is locally based and compatible with the special qualities and values of this unique, beautiful and little studied region.

Group of EK supporters at Old Mornington Camp -1997

Environs Kimberley was formed in August 1996 by a small band of Kimberley people concerned about a proposal to dam the Fitzroy River and establish a massive irrigated agriculture industry in the west Kimberley. The group soon gained in strength and numbers, and became incorporated in April 1997. Activities now include many issues and cover the entire Kimberley region.

Management

A management committee determines the organisation’s priorities and sets the direction of EK’s campaigns and projects. The day-to-day activities are managed by the Coordinator.

Environs Kimberley believes that:

  • the natural environment of the Kimberley is its major asset and must be protected
  • decisions about the region should be made in consultation with local residents, through participatory planning
  • Traditional Owners have an intrinsic right to manage their country

Environs Kimberley strives to ensure that:

  • the region’s native vegetation and animals remain diverse and abundant
  • water resources remain a public asset and the natural flows of the rivers are maintained
  • the land, water and sea remains unpolluted and healthy;
  • the natural environment is protected from unsuitable and unsustainable development
  • economic projects are in keeping with our values and benefit local people
  • people learn about and appreciate the Kimberley environment
  • Kimberley people understand and participate in natural resource management of their region
  • Traditional Owners take part in all decision-making that affects the environment of the region
  • community, government and industry manage country co_operatively on sound environmental principles
  • a long-term vision of the region’s future guides all decisions affecting the environment and culture

EK also works to:

  • protect the Kimberley from large scale land clearing and big irrigated agricultural developments
  • keep the Fitzroy and other Kimberley rivers flowing free
  • keep the Kimberley clean, green and GE free
  • support economic development that is sustainable and environmentally benign
  • support Aboriginal Traditional Owners’ custodianship of country
  • monitor mining proposals and activities
  • promote development and use of environmentally sustainable energy production and waste management systems
  • influence government processes, policies and legislation
  • maintain ecological diversity and abundance
  • engage members of the public in conservation work
  • build strong alliances with other environment groups
  • encourage greater environmental responsibility and accountability by industry and government
  • support efforts to rehabilitate areas of the Kimberley environment that have become degraded
  • promote greater awareness of the region through the media and public presentations
  • produce informative newsletters, booklets and pamphlets
  • increase our knowledge of the Kimberley through collaborative projects

Membership

EK relies heavily on its membership. We rely on their financial contributions, through subscriptions, donations and other fundraising activities. We seek their support to influence the development of the Kimberley region in an environmentally, culturally, socially and economically sustainable way.

We also encourage members to play an active role in the organisation’s activities – to direct and manage the organization, promote the group through projects and campaigns, contribute to our publications, get involved in field work, etc.
