(Prize: ‘Life on the edge: we are all in this together’ by Jeanné Browne. 140 x 87 cm mixed media work on canvas)
This large-scale, multi-layered, mixed media work was screen-printed in stages, using stencils created from many years of drawn records of shellfish local to Broome’s coastal edge. Most of these forms, and the over-hanging mangrove flowers and seedpods, derive from the mangroves and adjacent reef around Barred Creek.
Through this work Jeanne’s hope is to reverence the biodiversity and deep layering of time in these coastal areas, which the local countrymen and women who strive to look after the places depend on for their sustenance and the practice of their culture.
Jeanné Browne is a Melbourne art-maker. Since 1992, her artwork has been significantly shaped by extended time spent north of Broome, with the Goolarabooloo Aboriginal community, whose land, knowledge and relationship to the area remains dynamic and alive.
Over this time, Jeanné kept extensive visual diaries in the vein of old naturalists’ journals, documenting the local understanding of place, the language and the six-seasonality of the area adjacent to the coast, especially its traditional food sources, and the uses of plants.
