I’m about to vote in the state election and am keen to know what commitments your party has made to protect the globally important environmental and cultural values of the Kimberley.
I am very concerned about the future of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River, and the plans by billionaires to take billions of litres of water out of the river for irrigated agriculture. I’d like to know if your party will ensure this doesn’t happen and that this National Heritage-listed and Registered Aboriginal Heritage Site will be protected. The river is important for tourism, recreation, local people’s mental health and wellbeing. It is highly valued for Barramundi fishing, as well as being a nursery for critically endangered species like the Freshwater Sawfish. Please let me know where your party stands on full protection for the river.
The fact that the Kimberley has the most intact tropical savannah in the world is something that I value highly and I’m keen to see that it remains that way. The proposals for fracking in the region are particularly worrying and for me, the risk of pollution and contamination is too high. For me, the Kimberley’s intact landscape is something that we should treasure and not desecrate. I have seen the damage to landscapes that the fracking industry can do; please let me know if your party will ban fracking here.
I’m also passionate about making sure the Kimberley coast remains intact and that marine parks protect its coral reefs, seagrass beds and the Humpback Whale nursery. I’m keen to know if you agree on the level of protection considered necessary by marine scientists to ensure a healthy coast. Please let me know where your party stands on this, and on the Marine Park proposed for the Buccaneer Archipelago.
I look forward to your reply so that I am fully informed about your party’s positions on the above, please also let me know about any other environmental commitments to the Kimberley, as this will influence my vote.
