A critical chance to ban fracking in the Kimberley

The Kimberley remains one of Western Australia's great unspoilt treasures, hosting one of the largest unspoilt tropical woodlands left in the world, and vast unpolluted wetlands and rivers which act as the lifeblood of the region.

Yet the Kimberley is part of the 2% of Western Australia that is open to unnecessary risks of fracking for unconventional gas.

As my local Labor representative, I'm calling on you to act on this critical opportunity to help get a motion passed for a ban on fracking at the upcoming Labor Conference happening (8 Nov) in Fremantle.

There is an imminent threat of fracking in the Kimberley, as right now a Texan fracking company, Black Mountain Energy, has an application sitting with the WA EPA, and their recommendation could be released any day now. This Texan company awaits approval for their proposed 20 drilling and fracking wells in the West Kimberley. If approved by the WA Labor Government, this would mark the beginning of the industrialisation of the Kimberley.

I'm calling on you to:

  • Lobby within the Labor Party to help pass the motion to ban fracking at the upcoming Labor Conference (8 Nov).

  • Support and lobby other key members to reject Black Mountain Energy’s current 20-well fracking proposal for the West Kimberley, located near the heart of the National Heritage-listed Martuwarra Fitzroy River.

I will be following this issue closely and await your public response to these points.
