Help make the Martuwarra Fitzroy River a priority in 2025!
In 2017 the Labor Government made an election promise to protect the Martuwarra Fitzroy River, since then we have made big progress, with the creation of three new national parks and a commitment for no further surface water from the river.
However, there is still more work to do and until the job is finished, the Martuwarra remains at risk from large-scale development.
It’s crucial that leaders and candidates know that protecting the Martuwarra is an important issue for you in the lead up to the WA Election.
In 2025, it’s critical that long-term protection is enacted, for the river, its floodplains, wetlands and tributaries, that is co-designed with Traditional Owners.
Here’s why you should send a message for the Martuwarra:
- Proposals to pump huge amounts of water from the Martuwarra and its floodplains threaten to destroy this healthy, free-flowing river and create a Murray-Darling disaster.
- The river is the lifeblood of the Kimberley, supporting local communities, culture, tourism, fishing, and rare wildlife such as the critically endangered freshwater sawfish.
- Traditional Owners been working for decades to have their rights, culture and the Martuwarra Fitzroy River protected.
- This is our chance to protect the National Heritage listed Martuwarra Fitzroy River for good and create long-term binding protection.
