Kimberley environment groups welcome delay of Fitzroy River management plan

Environment groups in the Kimberley Like Nowhere Else alliance have welcomed today’s announcement by the WA Government to delay the Fitzroy River management plan and water allocation plan, calling the decision sensible and necessary.

Martin Pritchard from the Kimberley Like Nowhere Else alliance said the decision would allow time for proper consultation with Traditional Owners.

“The Fitzroy River has outstanding natural and cultural values that need to be protected in partnership with Traditional Owners. With the current lockdown of Aboriginal communities along the river, it is impossible to have the meaningful conversations that are required to ensure the plans for the river are driven and supported by Traditional Owners,” he said.

“We look forward to continuing the conversation about the protection of the river and sustainable economic development that works for the river and local people when the covid crisis passes.”

Mr Pritchard also congratulated the WA Government and Traditional Owners on the progress made towards the Fitzroy River National Park.
“We congratulate the Government and Traditional Owners for the progress made towards the Fitzroy River National Park,” he said.

“This park will protect important stretches of the river including ancient river gorges and help implement the government’s historic ‘no dams’ commitment for the Fitzroy River. The park will also protect the outstanding biodiversity and cultural value of the surrounding stunning landscapes.”
